First Consultation with Breast Specialist/Surgical Oncologist

The next step was to set up an appointment with a General Surgeon to remove the lumps. Since my mother-n-law had just recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and went through surgery I decided to take her advice and go to her Breast Specialist. She claimed she was the best in the area. At that point I just wanted them taken out and I didn't know if they were malignant. I wanted to go to someone who would not only do a great job, but make me feel comfortable. My mother-n-law's doctor was not covered on my insurance plan, but I was willing to pay something out of pocket to get the best advice at that time. My first consultation with her doctor was on June 2nd. My husband went along with me and we brought along the mammogram and ultrasound for her to review. She went through the physical exam first and when she felt the most apparent lump she also felt a second just behind it. At first she told me that they did not feel malignant and that it was most likely a fibroademona which was a benign tumor. We then sat in her office and she looked at the x-rays with us and explained what she thought. She said that she was 99% sure it was benign and they did not look suspicious. Also, giving my history and risk factors and age that it would lean towards being benign. I was very relieved when I left her office thinking I have nothing to worry about. She knew what she was looking at and if she thought it was a chance to be cancerous she would have said something. Well, at least I thought she would.
